Sri Lanka: 2009 massacre of Tamils remembered

Over 75,000 Tamils killed, 150,000 remain unaccounted for

London, UK – 19th May 2025

In May 2009, in #Mullivaikkal, tens of thousands of Tamil civilians were trapped inside so-called “No Fire Zones” created by the Sri Lankan state, only to be shelled, bombed, starved, and massacred.
Mothers clutching children.
Families burned alive.
Hospitals bombed.
People shot while waving white flags.
More than 75,000 Tamils were killed. Around 150,000 remain unaccounted for to this day.

On 18 May in London, the Peter Tatchell Foundation joined the Mullivaikkal Remembrance Day ceremony, organised by the British Tamils Forum, to remember the lives stolen by genocide.

The international community failed the Tamil people in 2009.
The United Nations stood by in silence, and perpetrators still walk free. Gotabaya Rajapaksa and his acolytes must face international justice.

There can be no reconciliation without accountability.
