The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) exists to challenge discrimination and protect human rights.The EHRC is committed to ensure that everyone is treated with dignity and respect, and that everyone has an equal chance to succeed in life.The EHRC has a statutory remit to promote and monitor human rights; and to protect, enforce and promote equality across the nine “protected” grounds: age, disability, gender, race, religion and belief, pregnancy and maternity, marriage and civil partnership, sexual orientation and gender reassignment.The Commission covers England, Scotland and Wales, but not Northern Ireland (which has its own separate equalities body). The EHRC has offices in London, Manchester, Cardiff and Glasgow.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission no longer has a helpline for individuals. The Government decided to stop funding the EHRC helpline following a review of the EHRC’s provision of information. Advice and support is now available from the Equality Advisory Support Service.

 

Equality Advisory Support Service (EASS)

The Equality Advisory Support Service (EASS) gives free advice, information and guidance to individuals on equality, discrimination and human rights issues.The service is aimed at individuals who need more expert advice and support on discrimination issues than most advice agencies and local organisations can provide.

The EASS:

Gives personalised advice to individuals on discrimination.
Explains the options for informal resolution and helps people pursue them.
Advises on eligibility for legal aid and, if a person is not eligible, finding an affordable legal service or assisting a person to prepare and lodge a claim themselves.The EASS works closely with

EHRC, referring on potential test cases and sharing information to inform the EHRC’s wider work on equality.The EASS website is here:
