We stand in solidarity with everyone affected

The Peter Tatchell Foundation is horrified by the terrorist attack at Berlin Pride, which has left one person dead and many others injured. Our thoughts are with the victims, their loved ones and Berlin’s LGBT+ community.
This was an attack on people exercising their fundamental rights. Pride is a peaceful demonstration for equality, and no one should have to fear violence for living openly or standing alongside those who do. We stand in solidarity with everyone affected and with those determined that hatred will not silence them.
If, as the authorities believe, this was an act of Islamist terrorism, it is a reminder that Islamism remains a serious threat to LGBT+ people, women, Jews, liberal Muslims and others who reject religious authoritarianism. Islamism is a political ideology that seeks to impose its beliefs through intimidation and violence. It must be confronted wherever it appears, while rejecting prejudice against Muslims – the overwhelming majority of whom neither support nor practise extremism.
The answer to this attack is not fear or division. Democracies must defend the right to protest, speak freely and live openly, while ensuring that those who seek to destroy these freedoms are held to account.
